As a sort of pendant to the vacancy in the Times’ critic crew (scroll down three items) — because otherwise, Isherwood would presumably have reviewed the Encores! “Big River,” Feb. 8-12 — artistic director Jack Viertel wrote a crushingly condescending response to the review by Laura Collins-Hughes. Most admirably, the Times editors spoke up in her defense. Read the review first, then Playbill tells the story. Finally, give yourself the treat of a wry British view. Perhaps A. Pope (not a pope) sums it all up best, “to crush a butterfly upon a wheel.”
