ATCA-WI18 Conference Schedule Published

The 2018 annual conference for the American Theatre Critics Association is coming up this July 11-15 in lovely Spring Green, Wisconsin at American Players Theatre (APT).

Spring Green is a beautiful place, and American Players Theatre itself is quite special. Among the plays we’ll be seeing this year are the 1940s comedy “Born Yesterday,” Shakespeare’s pastoral “As You Like It,” Athol Fugard’s compelling and powerful “Blood Knot,” and George Farquhar’s late Restoration comedy “The Recruiting Officer.” “Exit the King,” Ionesco’s absurdist drama, rounds out the roster.

Our Perspectives on Criticism this year speaker is Carrie Coon, a Tony-nominated actor (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”) and APT alum who has recently had major roles in “Fargo,” “The Leftovers” and “Gone Girl.”

We’ve assembled some cool panels too, with subjects like how (and why) to start a theater podcast and how to navigate copyright and ownership in the internet age. Enrich Chicago does anti-racism training in the arts and will be coming up for a plenary session. We’ll talk about how we treat problematic classic plays in the age of #MeToo, and we’ll meet artistic directors from fine companies around the state.

Our accomodations for this year’s conference will be at the House on the Rock Resort, which includes a spa, pool and tennis courts and is located next to a golf course. We’ll explore charming Spring Green and take a trip downtown to the Dane County Farmers’ Market, the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country, held on Madison’s Capitol Square. On Wednesday, ATCA membership will be welcomed with a farm-to-table reception at White Oak Savanna.

We are proud of the work we’ve done to make this a great conference for professional development, as well as a chance to see some of the best classical acting in the Midwest. American Players Theatre’s Hill Theatre is a beautiful, comfortable, newly updated space featuring what Terry Teachout called “the finest classical repertory company in the U.S.”

Because we are so excited to be hosting the critics association in the Midwest this year, we’d love to have a strong showing of critics from Wisconsin as well as surrounding states. In addition to our friends in Chicago, we want to welcome critics from Minneapolis to Lansing, Indianapolis and Des Moines. If you’ve registered already, great! If not, register now here: atca.memberlodge.org/wi18-registration.

And invite your colleagues! New members who join and pay their ATCA dues ($100) by June 25 will get the entire cost of the conference covered by Foundation ATCA. It’s an excellent deal, and one we hope you’ll encourage the writers in your life to pursue.

Join us for the better part of a week in glorious Wisconsin summer. Take time to think about how to grow in your work and learn from your colleagues, and enjoy some truly excellent classical theater in a space like no other.
