ATCA returns to NYC for 2014 weekend meeting, Nov. 7-9
Save that date! Longtime New York ATCA chairs Sherry Eaker and Ira Bilowit invite all ATCA members to a long-standing tradition, an ATCA Weekend Meeting (aka “mini-meeting”) on Broadway and off.
Highlights include an interactive Playwriting Primer for Critics led by playwright Arthur Kopit, a panel of playwrights in the latest in our Perspectives in Criticism series, a Broadway panel on the influence of critics, a panel on “Social Media and You,” and the traditional Luncheon with the Stars at Sardi’s. FRIDAY, Nov. 7
Location: Lark Play Development Center, 311 W. 43rd St. (between 8th & 9th Aves.), 5th floor.
9:30 am: Registration sign-in / coffee and Danish
10 am: Welcome from Sherry Eaker and Ira Bilowit, providing an overview of the weekend. Greetings from ATCA chair Jonathan Abarbanel; new members introduced.
10:15: John Eisner, artistic director of the Lark Play Development Center, will introduce us to the center’s mission and its many programs.
10:30 – Noon: “An Interactive Playwriting Primer for Critics” led by Arthur Kopit, playwright and director of the Lark’s Playwrights’ Workshop. (ATCA members who are interested in participating in this exercise will receive a writing exercise devised by Mr. Kopit, separately. This is to be done BEFORE our meeting and there will be an instruction list accompanying the exercise.).
12:15 pm- 1:45 pm: “Perspectives in Criticism,” with playwrights offering their views on the state of the art of criticism and what they need and/or want from critics, especially given the increasing fragmentation of critical voices. Panel includes Arthur Kopit and three other nationally known playwrights.
2:00 to 3:00 pm: Lunch at the Lark Theatre
3:15 – 4:45: ” A Two-Way Street: Broadway and the Road: How Do Critics Influence the Flow of Traffic.” Panel includes Kristin Caskey, President, Fox Theatricals; Kevin McCollum, President/Founder, Alchemation; Albert Nocciolino, Partner/Presenter, Rochester Broadway Touring League (RBTL) and president/CEO, NAC Entertainment; and Lauren Reid, CEO/Theatre Division, Broadway Across America.
5 – 6:00: Cocktail reception hosted by the Nederlander Organization. Susan Lee, Chief Marketing Officer, will talk about the new Nederlander Newsletter and possible writing opportunities for ATCA members.
6:00 pm on: Dinner and theatre on your own.
SATURDAY, Nov. 8
ATCA’s traditional “Luncheon With The Stars” at Sardi’s, 234 W. 44th St. (between. 7th & 8th Aves.)
Greetings from Ira Bilowit and Sherry Eaker. The Celebrity Brunch is ATCA’s longstanding tradition, where performers, directors, and celebrity theatre artists from an array of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows mingle with ATCA members, have lunch with us, and then respond to questions from their designated ATCA hosts. This year’s guests will be announced in due course.
10:00 am: Sign-in and cash bar.
10:30-11:30: Arrival of celebrity guests and mingling.
11:30 – 12:45: Sit-down luncheon and introduction of theatre artists.
SUNDAY, Nov. 9

9:30 am: Check-in; coffee and bagels.
10:00 – 10:30 pm: ATCA General Membership Meeting
10:45 – Noon: “Social Media and You,” a discussion and Q & A. Panel includes Mark Lowry (TheaterJones.com) and other techies.
