58th Annual Henry Hewes Design Awards streamed October 24, 2022
The 58th Henry Hewes Design Award Honors were announced September 28, 2022 and celebrated during a live-streamed awards ceremony October 24, 2022, hosted by committee chair and ATCA member Jeffrey Eric Jenkins.
The 2022 Awards recognize artistry on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway stages for the 2021–2022 season, Honorees include Adam Rigg for their scenic design for The Skin of Our Teeth, Lincoln Center Theater (accepted by Charlie Corcoran on Adam Rigg’s behalf); Dede Ayite for her costume design for Merry Wives, New York Shakespeare Festival in the Park (presented by Anita Yavich); Kathy A. Perkins for her lighting design for Trouble in Mind, Roundabout Theatre Company (presented by Isabella Byrd); Mikaal Sulaiman for his sound design for Sanctuary City, New York Theatre Workshop (presented by Palmer Hefferan); David Bengali for his media design for Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, Signature Theatre (presented by Peter Nigrini); and James Ortiz for his puppetry design for The Skin of Our Teeth, Lincoln Center Theater (presented by Jeffrey Eric Jenkins).
Ming Cho Lee Lifetime Award Honorees celebrated in the ceremony were lighting designer Jules Fisher (presented by Peggy Eisenhower) and lighting designer Jennifer Tipton (presented by Stephen Strawbridge).
Jenkins noted the committee’s enthusiasm about the year’s choices. “We are delighted to celebrate the design community and applaud the determination, creativity, and dedication of all theater designers who have persevered through difficult times and are now poised to help lead the theater into the future. These honorees and their achievements are wonderful examples of what lies ahead.”
The Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee includes theater critics Jeffrey Eric Jenkins, chair; David Barbour; David Cote; Naveen Kumar; Helen Shaw; and Martha Wade Steketee. Brittani Samuel observed the committee’s 2022 deliberations and now serves as a full voting member. The awards are sponsored by the Henry Hewes Foundation for the Theater Arts.
