60th Annual Henry Hewes Design Awards announced, celebration scheduled for October 21, 2024

NEW YORK — The Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee has announced the 2024 Henry Hewes Design Awards Honorees who will be recognized at the 60th annual ceremony on October 21, 2024 in New York.

The 2024 Awards recognize artistry on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway stages for the 2023–2024 season, 2024 Henry Hewes Design Awards will be presented to: scenic design team dots for Broadway’s Appropriate; costume designer Oana Botez for Signature Theatre Company’s Orlando; lighting designer Jane Cox for Appropriate; sound designer Jonathan Deans for Atlantic Theater Company’s Buena Vista Social Club; media designer David Bengali for New York Theatre Workshop’s Here There Are Blueberries; and hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis for Broadway’s Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.

The Hewes Committee also voted a Special Citation for Excellence in Design to the Broadway design team of Stereophonic (David Zinn for scenic, Enver Chakartash for costume, Jiyoung Chang for lighting, Ryan Rumery for sound, and Robert Pickens and Katie Gell for hair and wig).

Seven of the twelve 2024 honorees are receiving their first award from the Hewes committee. For the 2024 honors, an all-time high of 130 theater theater artists were nominated for outstanding artistry in 79 productions presented during the 2023–24 New York theater season on, Off, and Off-Off Broadway.

[October 18, 2024 announcement] Lighting designer Beverly Emmons will be honored with the Ming Cho Lee Award for Lifetime Achievement in Design. A five-time honoree of the Hewes Awards for six productions dating back to The Elephant Man in 1979, Emmons has 33 Broadway credits and nearly four dozen Off Broadway designs that have made a profound impact on theater culture for nearly five decades.

The Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee includes theater critics chair Jeffrey Eric Jenkins, David Barbour, David Cote, Naveen Kumar, Brittani Samuel, Helen Shaw, and Martha Wade Steketee. The awards are sponsored by the Henry Hewes Foundation for the Theater Arts.
