ATCANY2024 | HowlRound livestreaming Medina Prize winners’ Nov. 9 discussion
Anyone not attending the American Theatre Critics/Journalists Association’s annual conference and presentation of the third annual Edward Medina Prize for Excellence in Cultural Criticism this year can watch a livestream of a discussion between Christian Lewis (they/them; Variety, Queerty, Playbill), this year’s winner, and last year’s winner, Gloria Oladipo (she/her; The Guardian, 3Views).
The discussion begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, hosted by HowlRound Theatre Commons, a communications platform for theater makers.
This conversation comes a year after the captivating conversation between Oladipo and the inaugural Medina Prize winner, Brittani Samuel (she/her) during the 2023 convention.
“We want to do all we can to spotlight these diverse critics, their experiences, ideas, and their different pathways and challenges in the field,” said David John Chávez (he/him), ATCA’s executive chair.
Lewis and Oladipo will discuss the state of theater, their arts journalism careers, and the importance of fresh perspectives, among other topics.
The Edward Medina Prize was created in 2022 to celebrate the life of Nuyorican theater critic, Edward Medina, who championed new, diverse voices in theater criticism and theater journalism.
The Prize is sponsored in part by Foundation ATCA, and by Critical Minded, an initiative to invest in cultural critics of color, cofounded by The Nathan Cummings Foundation and The Ford Foundation.
